Company Profile

A & M Wood Specialty Inc. continues to offer one of the broadest inventories in North America of wood and related wood products. For the furniture maker and architectural millwork shops we stock over 120 species of fine hardwoods and veneers, as well as a broad selection of furniture grade and specialty plywood's. All of the solids can be purchased rough or dressed to your specifications. Many European species are available, with boards up to 42 inches wide occasionally on hand.

For the instrument maker, be it string, woodwind or keyboard, we stock a variety of traditional woods and associated products. A browse through our price list or web site will give you an understanding of our varied selection. For wood turners we have many species of kiln dried wood in 3 inch and 4 inch thicknesses, a variety of partially dry half logs, numerous squares in various species and dimensions, plus a large inventory of burls ranging from quite small to several hundred pounds.

For the carvers, again a variety of species are on hand in kiln dried 3 inch and 4 inch thicknesses. We also have facilities to laminate carving blocks to any size you wish.

Contractors will find our selection of species available that can be made into flooring, wall paneling, or moldings, a welcome change from the norm.

Traditional species and specialty plywood's are on hand for model makers, boat builders and airplane builders. Knifemakers and gunsmiths will find new and exciting varieties to choose from, as well as the more familiar ones.

Marquetry enthusiasts will be excited by our broad selection of veneers in a wide range of colour, grain and texture. With this in mind, all of our veneers are available in 16 inch lengths when variety is the prerequisite.

Last of all, for the hobbyist, we offer all of the above as well as the facilities of a complete millwork shop and an experienced staff with 65 years of accumulated knowledge in the specialty wood field.

Company History

In 1973 I had been making custom furniture for two years but found myself, as did other local designer/craftsmen, with the continual problem of sourcing fine hardwood and veneer. This lack of raw material led me, in the same year, to start A & M Wood Specialty Inc. The intention was to sell wood to other craftspeople, giving me at the same time an access to a varied inventory for my own furniture.

Shortly thereafter I moved into the premises that we still occupy, an old two story textile mill overlooking the Speed river in Cambridge, Ontario. By 1976 I stopped making furniture, as the wood business had grown to the point that it occupied all of my time.

In the early eighties we took over the 5,000 sq.ft. warehouse attached to the two storey building we occupied, and in 1984 bought the entire property, giving us a total dry storage area of about 15,000 sq.ft., 9,000 of which is heated.

Cambridge is one hour west of Toronto, three hours east of Detroit, and two hours north of Buffalo. Our shop is about 2 minutes south of the 401, a four lane east/west expressway.

In the very early days we served a predominately local market. We now ship on a regular basis to all Canadian provinces, all states in the United States, and international destinations such as Germany, U.K., Japan, Australia, Indonesia, Ireland, China and Romania.
